Should I Give My Autistic Child an iPad?

Many parents wonder whether giving their autistic child an iPad will help or hurt their development. The answer isn’t a simple yes or no, it depends on how the iPad is used.

When used intentionally, iPads can be helpful tools. Educational apps may support communication, learning, and engagement, especially for children who use visual supports or AAC (augmentative and alternative communication). For some children, an iPad can reduce frustration by giving them a way to express needs and follow routines.

However, unstructured or excessive screen time can interfere with important developmental skills. Overreliance on an iPad may limit opportunities for social interaction, play, language development, and real-world learning. That’s why balance is key.
