What Is Chinning in Autism?

By Milestone Achievements Staff

Chinning is a type of self-stimulatory behavior (stimming) sometimes seen in individuals with autism. It involves rubbing, pressing, or tapping the chin against objects, surfaces, or even people. Like other forms of stimming, such as hand-flapping, rocking, or spinning, chinning is a way for autistic individuals to regulate sensory input or express emotions.

Why Chinning Happens:

  1. Sensory Input – The pressure or movement provides comforting physical feedback.
  2. Self-Regulation – Chinning may help manage stress, anxiety, or overstimulation.
  3. Communication – For some children, stimming behaviors like chinning may signal excitement, frustration, or a need for comfort.
  4. Routine and Repetition – Many autistic individuals find repetitive behaviors soothing and grounding.

Chinning itself is not harmful unless it leads to injury or interferes with daily activities. In those cases, ABA therapy can help by teaching alternative coping strategies and redirecting the behavior in positive ways.
