What’s the Difference Between Shaping and Chaining in ABA?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) uses evidence-based strategies to teach new skills, and two of the most common are shaping and chaining. While both aim to help children with autism learn effectively, they work in different ways.

Shaping involves reinforcing small steps toward a desired behavior. For example, if the goal is teaching a child to say “water,” shaping might begin by rewarding any vocal attempt, then progress to clearer sounds, and finally the full word. It’s about gradually building a skill through successive approximations.

Chaining, on the other hand, breaks complex tasks into smaller, teachable parts. For instance, teaching handwashing may be divided into steps: turning on the faucet, applying soap, rinsing, and drying hands. Each step is taught and reinforced until the entire chain of behaviors is mastered.

Together, shaping builds new skills from the ground up, while chaining organizes and teaches multi-step routines. Both are powerful tools when guided by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).

At Milestone Achievements, we use shaping and chaining to help families achieve meaningful progress through ABA therapy programs in Georgia
