What Does It Mean to Be “On the Spectrum”?

When someone says a child is “on the spectrum,” they’re referring to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The word spectrum means there is a wide range of strengths, challenges, and support needs. No two autistic children are exactly alike.

According to the CDC, autism affects communication, social interaction, and behavior, but it presents differently in every individual. Some children may have speech delays, while others communicate well but struggle with social cues. Some may need significant daily support, while others live independently with minimal assistance.
